£1.18m award for 400kW loch-source heat pump

UK – North Lanarkshire Council has received £1.18 million towards a planned 400kW closed-loop water-source heat pump system at Strathclyde Country Park Watersports Centre, replacing the building’s end-of-life gas boilers.

The Scottish Government said the award was the first from the £25 million Clyde Mission Heat Decarbonisation Fund and project authorities forecast that the redevelopment will reduce annual site carbon emissions by 90%.

Economy Secretary Stephen Flynn said: “The full £25 million package from the Scottish Government will help reduce costs and future-proof both the private and public sectors across the Clyde Corridor, and the £1.18 million announced for the park today marks the start of this vital work.

“It will help transform the current 50 year old building into a modern, dynamic tourist attraction with strong community benefits, supporting local health, education and job opportunities.

“Using the natural resources in the park as the heat source is an innovative idea that will cut emissions and ensure the business it fit for the future. We want Scotland to become a world-leader in sustainable tourism and this is exactly the type of project that will help to make that vision a reality.”

The proposed system will draw heat through sealed pipework submerged in Strathclyde Loch. It will be supported by 60kWp of solar PV as part of a wider retrofit, reconfiguration and extension of the 1970s watersports centre building.

The North Lanarkshire Council-led project is due to create a redeveloped facility known as Strathshore, and the latest official target is for completion and reopening in 2027.
