VRF upgrade supports casino climate control

UK – Carrier Solutions UK has supplied a combination of Toshiba heat recovery VRF, heat pump VRF and split air conditioning systems for Grosvenor Casinos Reading South.

The project, delivered with installing contractor Mid-Tech Services and facilities management provider Cloudfm, formed part of ongoing work by casino operator The Rank Group to update building systems and support its wider environmental objectives.

R32 heat recovery system serves staff areas

A Toshiba R32 SHRM Advance heat recovery VRF system was installed to serve ground floor staff areas. The installation combines wall-mounted and four-way cassette indoor units with a 40kW outdoor unit.

The SHRM Advance system provides simultaneous heating and cooling through heat recovery, allowing different areas connected to the system to operate according to their individual requirements.

Additional R32 wall-mounted split systems were installed in specific spaces, including CCTV and communications rooms.

The updated system gives us a new level of environmental control for key areas of the building and supports our wider plans to improve environmental performance across our estate.

Existing air handling infrastructure retained

Rather than replacing all of the building’s existing equipment, the project also integrated new Toshiba equipment with the air handling infrastructure already in operation.

Carrier Solutions UK supplied 11 R410A heat pump VRF condensers to support existing air handling units equipped with DX cooling coils. Associated DX controller and valve kits were also supplied.

Touchscreen centralised controllers and BP2 building management system connectors provide central temperature management across different areas of the casino.

Installation completed while casino remained open

Installation took place over four months with Grosvenor Casinos Reading South continuing to operate throughout the work, requiring coordination between the project team and contractors on site.

Wayne Bramwell, Technical Project Lead at The Rank Group, said the project formed part of its ongoing programme to review and update systems across Grosvenor Casinos.

Pastor Casan, Managing Director, UK&I, Carrier CSE-R Europe, said: “Our focus is on helping customers update their building systems in ways that fit their operational needs. The Grosvenor Casinos Reading South project highlights how collaboration across the supply chain can deliver effective solutions for complex environments.”
