Trianco adds R290 indoor heat pump
UK – Trianco has introduced a new R290 indoor heat pump designed to provide a low carbon heating solution for properties where installing an outdoor unit is not practical.
The new Activair R290 air source heat pump is available as a 3.2kW wall-mounted model and a 5kW floor-standing unit. Designed to deliver both space heating and domestic hot water when paired with a hot water cylinder, Trianco says the system is aimed at retrofit, new-build and social housing applications.
Unlike most conventional air source heat pumps, the Activair R290 is installed entirely indoors, making it suitable for apartments without balconies or homes with limited external space. Externally, only two ventilation grilles are visible, while the indoor unit has dimensions comparable to a domestic boiler.
Trianco says the compact system is intended for small to medium-sized homes, providing all the functionality of an outdoor heat pump while overcoming installation challenges associated with restricted outdoor space.
The Activair R290 can also provide cooling when installed with fan coil units in place of radiators, enabling homeowners to use the same system for both heating and cooling.
By eliminating the need for an outdoor unit, our Activair R290 indoor heat pumps provide a space-saving solution that can be installed in airing cupboards, garages or loft spaces alongside a hot water cylinder.

Trianco says the units have been designed to simplify installation while reducing labour costs. An optimised air duct design promotes smooth airflow, helping to minimise energy losses during operation and improve overall efficiency.
The compressor is fully enclosed within composite silencing material to reduce vibration and operating noise, creating what it describes as a quieter and more comfortable indoor environment.
The heat pump also incorporates several safety features associated with the use of R290 refrigerant. Equipped with both a gas separator and refrigerant leak detector, the system continuously monitors refrigerant concentration following start-up. If refrigerant levels exceed pre-set thresholds, the unit automatically initiates shut-down protection while the fan switches to a pre-set speed to ventilate and discharge the refrigerant safely to the outside.
