James Gilbert Burlison RIP
UK – The British Refrigeration Association has paid tribute to James Gilbert Burlison, the first President of the Heat Pump Association, who died in April.
In its obituary, the BRA said: “The UK HVACR industry has lost one of its most dedicated and influential figures with the passing of James Gilbert Burlison on 11 April 2026, following a remarkable career spanning more than six decades.
“Gilbert Burlison made an enduring contribution to the sector through his leadership, technical expertise and commitment to industry progress. Uniquely, he served as President of both the HEVAC Association (1996–1998) and the Heat Pump Association – where he was its first President – as well as holding a senior leadership role as Chairman of the FETA Board. At one point, he was the only individual to have led all three bodies concurrently, reflecting the exceptional regard in which he was held.
“His professional career included senior positions across the industry, notably as Managing Director of Zero Maclean Europe and Temperature, and as a Director of Prestair Nigeria. Gilbert also played a pivotal role in key industry developments, including contributing to FETA’s first website, one of the first trade association websites in the UK, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry in 1995. Later, he was instrumental in engagement with government during the extension of Part L of the Building Regulations to air conditioning in 2006.
“Gilbert’s influence extended beyond leadership titles; he was widely respected for his insight, integrity and dedication to advancing standards across the HVACR sector.
“He is survived by his wife Olga, daughter Janice and son Colin, who can take great pride in his legacy and contribution to the industry. He will be greatly missed by colleagues, friends and all who had the privilege of working with him.”
