tado° unveils redesigned Smart Thermostat X

Smart heating specialist tado° has launched its second-generation Smart Thermostat X in the UK, introducing redesigned wired and wireless controls for relay-controlled heat pumps, boilers and water-based underfloor heating.

The wired Smart Thermostat X measures 110 x 110 x 17.8mm and has a matte-white finish, LED matrix display and touch-sensitive light ring. A configurable top button can be assigned to functions including resuming a schedule, boosting heating or displaying humidity.

The device replaces the first-generation model’s mechanical controls and three AAA batteries with a USB-C rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

The wired version is specified for relay and OpenTherm connections, allowing it to replace a wired room thermostat or control water-based underfloor heating. tado° also offers a wireless UK starter kit, comprising a Programmer X with hot water control and OpenTherm support, plus a Wireless Temperature Sensor X.

The manufacturer says the range is compatible with boilers, heat pumps and water-based underfloor heating, although installers and customers will need to confirm suitability for the individual appliance and controls arrangement.

The second-generation products retain the X platform’s Matter and Thread connectivity and work alongside first-generation X devices. A Bridge X, or another compatible Thread border router, is required where a home does not already have one. X products cannot operate in the same app Home as tado° V3+ and older devices, although both can be accessed through one account using the company’s Multi Home feature.

For heat pump applications controlled directly by relay, the existing free Control Mode includes a heat pump setting intended to reduce unnecessary compressor starts and cycling.

The new hardware is available through the tado° UK webshop and selected European retailers.
