Solid Energy and Clayton collaborate on industrial heat pump for steam

Denmark – Solid Energy and Clayton Industries are working together to develop a high temperature industrial heat pump capable of producing steam at up to 4 bar.

The strategic collaboration combines Solid Energy’s very high temperature heat pump technology with Clayton’s industrial steam generation expertise, representing an important step in efforts to decarbonise industrial process heat.

Steam is still used in large parts of the world’s industry, with most plants fired by gas or oil. The new partnership will target those applications with an electric solution capable of delivering the high temperatures needed.

Solid Energy will provide its heat pump technology for integration with a Clayton steam generation module. The company’s existing high temperature heat pumps can deliver flow temperatures of up to 165°C, with the new steam solution building on the same compressor technology and control architecture.

Jan Enemark, CEO of Solid Energy, said: “Industrial steam is one of the areas where electrification can make a very substantial difference.

By combining our proven heat pump platform with Clayton’s steam expertise, we can offer industry a practical route to high-temperature steam with significantly reduced reliance on fossil fuels.

“Just as importantly, we have achieved the higher temperature capability by evolving technology that has already been proven in operation for many years.”

Levi Stenten, European CEO of Clayton Industries, said: “Our customers are increasingly looking for steam solutions that combine efficiency, reliability and a credible pathway to decarbonisation.

“This collaboration brings together two complementary technologies and areas of expertise. The result is a compelling solution for industrial sites seeking to replace or supplement conventional fossil-fuel-fired steam generation while retaining the performance their processes require.”

Clayton Industries has been developing industrial steam technology since 1930. Its European engineering and production operations have been based in Bornem, Belgium, since 1961, where Clayton of Belgium serves as the company’s EMEA headquarters and principal production hub for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The Clayton Group is headquartered in California, with additional production facilities in Mexico and Europe and subsidiaries in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK.

Solid Energy is a Danish manufacturer specialising in very high temperature industrial heat pumps designed to recover and upgrade heat for demanding industrial processes.
