IOR steps up STEM careers ambitions

UK – The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) Industry Skills Alliance aims to engage with 100 schools before the end of the year as part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness of STEM careers in the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump (RACHP) sector.

The initiative will be driven by an expanded network of IOR STEM ambassadors, who visit schools to introduce young people to exciting careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Through engaging presentations and hands-on activities tailored to different age groups, ambassadors help students understand the vital role RACHP technologies play in modern life and the wide range of career opportunities available within the industry.

To date, IOR STEM Ambassadors have reached almost 50 schools, inspiring young people with practical demonstrations and insights into the sector. The Alliance now aims to significantly increase that impact by encouraging more industry professionals to volunteer as STEM ambassadors.

Matt Harvey, IOR Education Outreach Project Manager, said: “We are incredibly grateful to our existing STEM Ambassadors for the time and enthusiasm they dedicate to promoting careers in the RACHP sector. They are making a real difference by helping young people understand the opportunities available within our industry. However, with ongoing skills shortages across the sector, we believe there is an even greater opportunity to raise awareness and inspire future talent. That’s why we’re encouraging more IOR members to consider becoming STEM Ambassadors and joining us in reaching our target of 100 schools by Christmas.”

Becoming a STEM ambassador is not only an effective way to promote careers in the RACHP industry, but also offers valuable personal and professional development opportunities. Volunteers can strengthen skills such as public speaking, communication and leadership while contributing to their local communities.
