First UK Clivet EDGE PRO replaces 40kW LPG boiler at 1844 Lincolnshire home
UK – The first Clivet EDGE PRO installation in the UK has replaced a 40kW LPG boiler at an 1844 Lincolnshire property, with room-by-room heat-loss calculations allowing a 16kW R290 air-source heat pump to be specified.
Gorse Cottage, near Boston, is the home of Simon Wardle and Diane Saunders of Ultimate Renewables Supplies. The five-bedroom property includes a two-bedroom annex and has been extended several times since the original section was built in 1844.
Heat loss determines system size
The property was previously served by a 40kW LPG boiler. Project information puts the calculated design heat loss at 14.58kW, enabling a 16kW EDGE PRO to be selected rather than sizing the replacement against the output of the existing boiler.
The installation is also Wardle and Saunders’ second Clivet heat pump system, having used the manufacturer’s equipment at their previous home.
Higher flow temperature limits radiator changes
Only three of the property’s 19 radiators were replaced.
Wardle said designing the system around a 45°C flow temperature would have required 16 radiators to be changed. Instead, the system was designed to operate at around 54°C, allowing 16 existing radiators to be retained and reducing the extent of work inside the property.
The installation also includes Clivet’s Adia control system and a hot water cylinder, with the main equipment housed in an insulated external plant room.
EDGE PRO uses R290
EDGE PRO is a reversible air-to-water monobloc using R290 refrigerant and is available in capacities up to 16kW. Clivet states that the range can produce water temperatures up to 80°C and operate in heating mode at outdoor temperatures down to -25°C.
The range is rated A+++ at a 35°C water temperature and can provide heating, cooling and domestic hot water.
£9,000 BUS grant
The project also qualified for the enhanced £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant available for eligible off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG with an air-to-water or ground-source heat pump.
The uplift came into effect on 21 July 2026 and is available until 31 March 2027.
